It was a lot of fun doing the blind tasting of Pale Ales and IPAs, an eye-opener to say the least! For those who did not participate, here is how we handled the tasting:
1. Pale Ales and IPA's were tasted separately.
2. Each beer was put in a plain brown bag and randomly assigned a number (Thanks Chris - she had the hardest job of all of us). Pale Ales were labeled P1-P9, while IPA's were labeled I1-I16.
3. Everyone was given a scoring sheet where they were asked to rate the beer on four characteristics (appearance, aroma, mouthfeel, and flavor) on a five point scale (0-5). Using these four scores, a total score was summed (0-20). Each scoring sheet also had room for notes/additional comments.
4. Once we finished tasting the flight of Pale Ales, everyone's scoring sheets were given to our official scorer and the
overall scores were entered into the cpu. We then moved on to tasting the flight of IPA's and did the same thing scoring-wise.
5. Once we finished both flights of beers, we 'unveiled' the beers and the overall results.
Here are the results...

The Pale Ale results were interesting, 4 out of the top 5 were home brewed! Not surprising, AB's attempt at a Pale Ale fell well short of the mark.

As shown above, we tasted a lot of IPA's and Dogfish Head 90 minute came out on top, followed closely by Moylan's Hopsickle (hopefully this will be available in Columbia soon). Hoppin Frog surprised me though, slightly beating out one of my personal favorites, Pliny the Elder.
Here are some pictures of the tasting:
